We are pleased to share an updated version of our Botany Primer, an in-depth, photo-rich guide to understanding botany for Nature's Notebook. This version of the Botany Primer is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act and can be perceivable and navigable to people with disabilities.
In the Summer of 2026, USA-NPN Undergraduate Student Evan Dial undertook remediation efforts to create a version of the Botany Primer that is compliant with with PDF/UA-1 (ISO 14289-1) standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/. Remediation efforts included fixing issues with color contrast, adding document structure, tags, and reading order so that assistive technologies such as screen readers can accurately interpret and navigate the content, and ensuring all images and graphics have alternative text. We are grateful to Evan for investigating accessibility standards, learning how to use a variety of new tools and platforms, and working diligently and with great attention to detail to bring the Primer into compliance.
Evan's work was made possible by funding from the Resilience Internships and Student Experiences (RISE) program within the Arizona Institute for Resilience (AIR) at the University of Arizona.
