Abstract

Metrics totrackseasonaltransitionsareneededforawidevarietyofecologicalandclimatologicalap-
plications. HereaMATLAB©toolkitforcalculatingspringindicesisdocumented.Thespringindiceshave
been widelyusedinearlierstudiestomodelphenologicalvariabilityandchangethroughtimeacrossa
wide rangeofspatialscales.Theseindicesrequireonlydailyminimumandmaximumtemperature
observations(e.g.,frommeteorologicalrecords)asinputalongwithlatitude,andproduceadayofyear
valuecorrespondingtothesimulatedaveragetimingof first leafand first bloomeventsamongthree
plant cultivars.Corefunctionstocalculatethespringindicesrequirenoexternaldependencies,anddata
for runningseveralillustrativetestcasesareincluded.Instructionsandroutinesforconducingmore
sophisticated monitoringandmodelingstudiesusingthespringindicesarealsosuppliedanddocu-
mented.
