Abstract

"For the four tree species, the required number of degree-days for bud burst is influenced positively by late frosts before bud burst; i.e. late frost decreases the required number of degree days for buds to develop (chilling effect). This phenomenon is known for many species and received renewed interest recently in the context of climate change (e.g. Chuine & Cour 1999, Hunter & Lechowicz 1992)."
