Because Parkinsonia microphylla uses its green bark for photosynthesis, it is able to continue manufacturing food/energy when it is leafless, which may be most of the year. Native Americans ate the seeds raw, or boiled or roasted, and ground them to make mush or use as a famine food.

What does this species look like?
What does this species look like?: 

Yellow paloverde is a drought-deciduous, large shrub to small tree growing up to 30 feet tall. Its yellow flowers have both male and female parts, are grouped into small clusters along the branches, and are insect-pollinated.

Yellow paloverde grows in arid and semi-arid climates. Typical habitats are alluvial outwash plains or lower-mountain and rocky slopes of the Sonoran desert as part of desert scrub and semi-arid grassland communities. It prefers well-drained soils with sand, sandy loam, or loam textures.

Why observe this species?

Yellow paloverde is a USA-NPN regional plant species. Regional species are ecologically or economically important but are distributed more locally than calibration species. The NPN integrates these observations to understand better plant responses within the different geographic regions of the nation.
