Plant Phenology Program

The USA-NPN plant monitoring program protocols for 2009 include 20 calibration species and over 200 regional species. These protocols are suitable for field researchers and for citizen scientists willing to learn a little bit about plants. Click "Observe" to participate!

Other ways to participate in plant phenology monitoring...
  • Project Budburst is a great introduction to phenological monitoring. It is the NPN general education and outreach program, and is appropriate for all levels of expertise. Project Budburst accepts observations for any plant species.
  • Cloned Plants Project The USA-NPN monitors cloned plants (genetically identical plants) to understand how these plants respond to climate without the effects of variation among different individuals. The core of the program is our cloned lilac observations. Observers receive a cloned lilac to plant, grow, and observe its phenology over many years. Other cloned plants will be added to the Cloned Plants Project in the future.
  • As a member of an NPN partner organization The USA-NPN has established partnerships with several organizations. Participants in NPN partner projects are invited to monitor plant phenology. Monitoring protocols for some partners vary slightly from USA-NPN protocols; more information is available on plant profile pages.
