Bigleaf lupine is an erect, perennial
, herbaceous
plant growing 2 to 4 feet tall, or more. Its small, blue to violet, to pink to white flowers have both male and female parts and are arranged into a showy display along a tall spike.
Bigleaf lupine prefers rocky, sandy, or loose-textured, well-drained soils in areas of low fertility, commonly in areas of medium to high rainfall. Depending on where it is found in the U.S., it can occur in forests, meadows, and bogs, and on shores, roadsides, and other disturbed sites.
